Deloitte puts global podcast and vodcast ad revenue near $5 billion in 2026. That is a rise of almost 20% in a year, and video is the reason the number moved.
Here is the direct answer before the detail. Video podcast advertising means paying to appear inside a podcast that publishes a video feed. It buys more attention than audio, and it converts worse per impression. Both halves of that are measured, not opinion.
This guide covers what the video formats cost and where video genuinely beats audio. It also shows how to shortlist shows whose viewers match your buyers. For platform level depth on one channel, read our breakdown of YouTube podcast audience data.
Does video podcast advertising actually work? It buys attention, not conversions. Oxford Road and Podscribe measured YouTube impressions as 18% less efficient at driving survey responses. On promo code conversions the gap widened to 25% against audio downloads.
1. Why video podcast advertising grew this fast
The audience did not drift toward video. It jumped, and fast. Deloitte's Fall 2025 Digital Media Trends survey found 27% of US consumers watch video podcasts weekly. Gen Z and Millennials lead that shift.
Advertisers moved inside a single buying cycle. Podscribe's Q1 2026 benchmark data shows episodic campaigns carrying a simulcast video component rose from 65% to 79% in a year. Four campaigns in five now ship with video attached.
Attention is the number that should change your plan
Reach is the obvious story here. Attention is the part that actually pays. Deloitte found 44% of video podcast watchers never multitask while watching, against 29% of audio only listeners.
A viewer who is not folding laundry is a viewer who sees your logo. That gap is the entire commercial argument for paying a video premium.
The living room is now part of the buy
WARC counts more than 700 million hours of podcasts watched monthly on YouTube through TV screens. That is up 70% year over year. Connected TV now accounts for 45% of total YouTube watch time in the US.
Your branded segment increasingly plays on a television in a lean back setting. Creative built for a phone screen underperforms there. Text small enough to need squinting is simply wasted budget.
Ask any show for its YouTube watch figures and its audio downloads as two separate numbers. They are different audiences counted in different ways. A blended figure hides which one you are actually buying.
2. Do video podcast ads convert as well as audio?
No. The gap is measured rather than argued, and it is the most important thing on this page.
Oxford Road and Podscribe analysed more than 1,000 campaigns across 100 brands for their white paper Re-Thinking YouTube. They tracked performance two independent ways: promo code redemptions, and how did you hear about us survey answers collected at checkout.
Both methods agreed. YouTube impressions came in 18% less efficient at driving survey responses. They also came in 25% less effective at generating promo code conversions than audio downloads.
The pattern held across the client base rather than in outliers. Oxford Road reports 78% of brands showed lower response rates as YouTube's share of impressions increased. In budget terms, every $1 million spent on YouTube podcast impressions may cost brand advertisers up to $250,000 in conversion value.
Why audio still closes better
The mechanism is discovery, not sound quality. Audio listeners pick a show and press play deliberately. A large share of YouTube podcast viewing arrives through algorithmic recommendation instead.
Intentional attention converts. Incidental attention simply gets remembered later. Treating video as a direct response channel is how a working budget line gets cancelled after one quarter.
| Placement type | Purchase conversion | Attention quality | How people arrive | Back catalogue value | Job to hire it for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Audio placements | Baseline for direct response | 29% never multitask | Deliberate choice of a known show | Ads swap across old episodes by feed | Closing a considered purchase |
| Video placements | 18% to 25% weaker, by method | 44% never multitask | Often algorithmic recommendation | Limited today, changing fast | Reach, recall and category entry |
Give video and audio two different success metrics before the campaign starts. Judge audio on cost per acquisition. Judge video on branded search lift and assisted conversions. A single shared last click target will always make video look like the loser.
3. The ad formats you can only buy on video
Video podcast ad formats earn a premium only when they do something audio physically cannot. Every format below fails on an audio feed, which is why these are the placements worth negotiating hardest for.
| Format | What it is | What you are really buying | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| On screen branding | Your logo sits in a lower third or chyron for a whole episode | Duration rather than a moment | Category recall and constant presence |
| Product in shot | The product is visible or handled on camera | Demonstration without a claim | Products that show well in seconds |
| On camera host read | The host endorses you looking into the lens | Face and voice, not voice alone | Trust transfer on a considered purchase |
| Clipped sponsor moment | Your segment is cut into Shorts, Reels or TikTok | Reach past the subscriber base | Stretching one placement across feeds |
On camera host read is still the workhorse
Podscribe reports that host read ads continue to outperform producer read ads across all metrics. They also hold up better as a show's ad load rises.
Hand the host talking points, never a finished script. A read delivered word for word from a brief sounds like a brief. On camera, a viewer watches it happen on the host's face.
Reserve verbatim wording for the lines your legal team genuinely requires. Everything else should sound like the person saying it.
The format almost nobody negotiates for
Ask whether sponsored segments get clipped into social posts. A show that clips well carries your placement well past its own subscriber count. A show that never clips caps your reach at the episode itself.
Ramp runs the duration version of this on the tech show TBPN, anchoring full episodes as an on screen sponsor. The brand simply never leaves the frame. Audio offers no equivalent.
Put clip rights in the contract before you sign. Specify how many clips, which platforms, and whether your segment is included. Shows rarely refuse this. They simply do not do it unless someone asks.
4. What a video podcast sponsorship costs
Video podcast ad cost is rarely a clean number. Sponsorships are sold as one blended package instead. That single quoted CPM usually covers an audio read, an on screen placement and social clips at once.
Bundled that way, the price is almost impossible to judge. Break it apart before you compare anything. For genre and audience size benchmarks across the whole market, use our podcast advertising cost breakdown.
Four things to ask before you accept a rate
- Audio downloads and YouTube views, separately: two different audiences, counted two different ways, quoted as one number.
- The price of each element alone: you may be paying a video premium for a placement your product does not need.
- Whether clips are included or extra: clip distribution is often the highest reach part of the deal and the easiest to forget.
- Average view duration, not view count: a view counted at 30 seconds says nothing about whether a mid roll was reached.
Why the back catalogue question changes your rate
On audio platforms, ads swap into old episodes through the feed. A listener finding a two year old episode hears your current ad. YouTube worked differently for years, so video placements historically carried no long tail.
That is changing. YouTube announced dynamic ad insertion for branded segments at Made on YouTube in September 2025. Creators can retire a finished deal and resell the slot, and testing began with a selected group.
Confirm the current rollout status with the show before you price a back catalogue buy. This one moves faster than most guides update.
Weight the split using the gap in section 2. If a package is 40% video impressions, discount those impressions by roughly a quarter. Only then compare the effective CPM against an audio only buy.
5. How to find video podcasts your buyers watch
Reach is worthless if it reaches the wrong people. A show with 30,000 targeted viewers in your category will usually out convert a general show ten times its size.
Scale gives that search useful context. MillionPodcasts indexes 134.2K video podcasts on YouTube and 43.1K shows with sponsors across 3M+ podcasts. The pool of video shows already selling ads is large, and much smaller than the market.
Filter on these five things, in this order
- Has a YouTube channel: confirms a video feed exists before you pay for any on screen placement.
- Listener demographics: income band, listener type and age generation decide whether viewers are your buyers.
- Has a sponsor: a show already selling ads has a rate card and a host who can deliver a read.
- Estimated monthly listeners: pick the band that fits your budget instead of chasing the biggest number.
- Latest episode date: filters out shows that quietly stopped publishing months ago.
Match audience to buyer first. Size is only a tiebreaker, never the goal.
Check that the video is real video
Not every podcast with a YouTube channel publishes camera footage. Some post static artwork over the audio to claim the slot. Open two recent uploads and look for real footage of hosts and guests.
Without it, the visual formats you are paying for do not exist. This one check takes ninety seconds and saves entire campaigns.
Video podcast advertising wins on reach, attention and recall. It does not win on closing the sale. Use it to be seen and remembered by exactly the right audience. Let audio placements and your own site do the converting.

Start free, no card →6. How to measure a video podcast campaign
View counts are the easiest number to report and the easiest to fool yourself with. A million views with no attribution tells you nothing.
The structural problem is delay. A viewer watches your segment on Tuesday, searches your brand on Thursday, then clicks a paid search result and books a demo. Your CRM credits paid search. The video reached the buyer and search took the credit.
Layer four signals instead of trusting one
- Pixel attribution: matches viewer device data to site visits and catches conversions that never touch a code.
- Show specific promo codes: catches only your most motivated viewers, so read the result as a floor.
- Post purchase surveys: a how did you hear about us field catches the indirect paths everything else misses.
- Branded search lift: usually the first place video reach shows up, well before revenue moves.
Those last two are not academic. Oxford Road and Podscribe built their whole study on promo codes and checkout surveys, because those two methods catch different buyers. Running only one leaves half the picture missing.
Deloitte found roughly a quarter of US podcast watchers and listeners often buy products advertised on podcasts. Rates run higher among Gen Z and Millennials. Most of those purchases will never carry your promo code.
Give it a 90 day window
Set attribution to at least 90 days, and longer for expensive or considered purchases. Judge video on a 30 day last click basis and your dashboard will report failure. The format builds recall that pays off later.
Cancelling a working channel on a window that was never long enough is the most common error here. For the full measurement stack across formats, see our guide to podcast advertising metrics that matter.
Record four weeks of branded search volume before your first episode airs. Without that pre campaign line, brand lift cannot be proven. It is also the metric video is most likely to win on.
7. Mistakes that waste a video podcast budget
Most wasted video spend traces back to a handful of avoidable errors. Every one of them is fixable before you sign anything.
Buying reach instead of fit
The biggest show is rarely the right show. Chasing subscriber counts means paying premium rates to reach people who will never buy. Shortlist on audience composition first, using the filters in section 5, and treat size as the tiebreaker.
Expecting video to close the sale
Measure a video sponsorship purely on last click conversions and it will disappoint you. That is not the job it does best. Pair it with audio placements and a strong landing experience, then judge video on the demand it creates.
Treating one episode as a test
A single appearance does not produce enough exposure to evaluate anything at all. Run two to four episodes on the same show before deciding. One episode tells you the ad ran, and very little beyond that.
Paying for video, then buying an audio format
Some brands pay the video premium and then run a plain host read that would have worked identically on audio. If you are not using one of the visual formats in section 3, you are paying for a feed you never use.
Building a show before validating an audience
Sponsoring first teaches you which audiences respond before you commit to producing anything. If you do not yet know who watches and what they react to, you are not ready to build. Our comparison of sponsoring versus launching your own podcast works through that decision.
Run your first video test on two shows, not one. A single show cannot tell you whether a weak result came from the format or from that particular audience.
If you need a new audience to notice and remember you, this is one of the strongest channels available in 2026. If you must close sales this quarter on last click, lead with audio. Buy video as the reach layer above it.
Which one applies depends on a single thing: whether your buyer already knows your category exists. Video creates that knowledge. Audio converts the people who already have it.
8. Video podcast advertising FAQ
Do video podcast ads work better than audio ads?
Not for driving purchases. Oxford Road and Podscribe measured YouTube impressions as 18% less efficient at driving survey responses. On promo code conversions the gap widened to 25% against audio downloads. Video wins on attention instead, with 44% of video podcast watchers never multitasking against 29% of audio listeners.
How much does a video podcast sponsorship cost?
Most video sponsorships are sold as bundles, not single placements. The quoted CPM covers an audio read, an on screen placement and social clips together. Ask the show to price each piece separately. A bundle you cannot break apart is a bundle you cannot judge.
Can you run dynamic ad insertion on YouTube podcasts?
YouTube announced dynamic ad insertion for branded segments at Made on YouTube in September 2025. Testing began with a selected group of creators. Confirm the current rollout status with the show or your rep before planning a back catalogue buy. This one is moving quickly.
How do you find video podcasts in your category?
Filter a podcast database on three things at once. Look for a YouTube channel, an existing sponsor, and listener demographics matching your buyer. MillionPodcasts indexes 134.2K video podcasts on YouTube and 43.1K shows with sponsors. That shortlist takes minutes, not an afternoon of clicking.
How long should a video podcast campaign run before you judge it?
Run two to four episodes on the same show, then measure across a 90 day window. One episode only tells you the ad ran. A 30 day last click report will call a working video campaign a failure. Recall and branded search build after the impression.
