Ear Hustle is prison slang for eavesdropping, and that's what listening to the show feels like: a raw, often funny, and always surprising peek into the reality of life inside prison. Hosts Nigel Poor and Earlonne Woods co-created the show that launched in 2017 while Earlonne was incarcerated at San Quentin State Prison, where Nigel was a volunteer teaching photography. Since Earlonne's release in 2018, the show has expanded to include stories from prisons across the state, including the California Institution for Women, as well as stories about getting out of prison and starting over, post-incarceration.From finding romance, to grappling with a life sentence, to trying to parent via 15-minute phone calls, Ear Hustle stories deliver what This American Life host Ira Glass calls a ''very real' and 'untragic' take on prison life. Ear Hustle is a proud member of Radiotopia from PRX, a network of independent listener-supported podcasts. After five DWI's landed me prison, something had to change. One day I got into a fight and I spent eight days in solitaire confinement thinking about my life and the decisions I had made that led me to that dark place, literally. I came out of the hole a different man with a different heart, mind, soul, direction, and outlook on life. I got mentored by a couple of inmates who eventually made parole but within a year they were both back in. This confused me and ticked me off. I wondered how I was going to make it out there. Since my release in 2006 we've opened up a transitional house for men, with another 'ranch' coming, launched a documentary, been on the Mike Huckabee Show, launched this podcast, and it goes into prisons all over the nation. more

In State Correctional Institution Muncy in Pennsylvania, roughly 150 women lifers — many of them incarcerated during the height of mass incarceration in the 1980s and 1990s — are now aging behind bars. Nationally, the average age of incarcerated women has risen to 41 and visits to the infirmary have skyrocketed in the past five years, increasing 573%. Chronic illnesses such as diabetes, arthritis, hypertension, and degenerative back issues often begin as early as age 35. By their mid-50s, many incarcerated women are already facing conditions associated with advanced aging. Prisons like SCI Muncy do not have the capacity to handle the complex needs of seniors. Poor diet, lack of exercise and inadequate healthcare have led to a public health crisis that receives scant attention. Dying on the Inside: Women Lifers at Muncy Prison is a production of Create. Hi, I'm Lisa Reilly, and this show is built on one simple belief: true stories can change how we see each other. Each week, I have the privilege to sit down with people from within the various criminal and social justice systems and organizations, including those with lived experience and those working to bring compassion and resources both behind and beyond the walls. All of them approach their lives and work with grit, hope, and purpose, which is what we're here to share because there's always a voice ready to challenge what you thought you knew. This podcast is dedicated to the 98% of people incarcerated in North Carolina who will eventually be released from prison back into their communities, often with few, if any resources. Through the voices of people in transition and those who support them, we explore hurdles and life long barriers many justice-involved people confront whether getting a drivers license, finding housing, or trying to find a job. We examine issues like substance use disorder and mental health that plague this population and ask what we as a society can do to support the formerly incarcerated and reduce recidivism. In 2023, Judy Van Wyk and April Barber partnered to create a podcast about the many issues people face when transitioning from prison. Van Wyk is a producer and criminal justice advocate. April Barber received a life sentence when she was 15. After more than 31 years, she had her sentence commuted by Governor Cooper. She was released March 24, 2022. ART WORK BY JOHN HARDIN more

Prison Focus Radio and Liberate the Caged Voices are projects of California Prison Focus. We intentionally and purposefully center New Afrikan Political Prisoners who organized the Historic California Hunger Strikes, authored the Agreement to End Hostilities, and developed Black August Memorial/Black August Resistance. These New Afrikans survived decades of torture in solitary confinement in Pelican Bay and Corcoran state prisons—euphemistically called 'security housing units' (SHUs)— meant to break their revolutionary minds. Liberate the Caged Voices exposes the terror and genocide plaguing our People in Prisons, and unites People with the power of revolutionary love. more

Not so much a true crime podcast, as a 'post-crime' podcast. The growing Asian American prison population and the impact of incarceration in our communities often goes unaddressed because of the cultural shame and stigma of incarceration in our families. This podcast looks at how incarceration specifically impacts API communities, and what it's like when you 'kill' your prisoner number and return to society. Produced by API RISE. We are here for the incarcerated, previously incarcerated, and their families!! We aim to Exalt Jesus, Equip the Believer, and Encourage the Incarcerated, released, and their families. Jack was a Chaplain in a Maximum Security Unit when COVID-19 shut us all down. No church activities were allowed, visitation was closed, and even the inmate phones would not connect to the outside. Jack made personal visits to inmates when there had been a death or family emergency and inmates were not allowed to call home. Facing the restrictions and the burden to communicate with inmates, Jack remembered these inmates had FM radios in their cells as their main connection to the outside world. With a couple of gracious like-minded sponsors, we got onto the airwaves to help as we properly could. Public Service information, encouraging testimonies, and hope-filled exhortations are the beginning of this radio program and podcast on the Securus tablets. Our team has over 50 years of incarceration experience to draw from as well as grateful testimonies of successful re-entry into society.
