The Beat, the Scene, the Sound follows DJ Disciple and his behind-the-scenes account of how DJs, promoters, fans, and others transformed house music from a DIY project into an international sensation—dive into the glitzy clubs, underground parties, and the diverse communities who made up the scene amidst the tumult of 1980s/90s-era NYC—between the fall of disco and the rise of EDM. The book unearths many untold stories of the era. When house first rose to prominence in the 1980s, it brought people together—Palladium, Paradise Garage, Tunnel, Zanzibar, Studio 54, and other clubs were going strong. But as DJ Disciple established himself in the scene, he witnessed it shatter. During the crack-cocaine epidemic, he literally dodged bullets bringing his records to and from clubs at night. HIV/AIDS and homophobia threw up fear-based partitions. Then, mayors worked to close the clubs. House music was pushed underground and then abroad to the UK and Europe. Disciple and many other DJs sought to regain a footing in the United States, but that only became possible with the rise of commercialized EDM. With dozens of interviews and historic photographs, The Beat, the Scene, the Sound shows what is possible when you bring people together and what can unravel when you split them apart.Whether he's dropping beats or dropping jaws, DJ Disciple is changing the game of modern music forever. David Banks, aka DJ Disciple, is an internationally-touring artist, DJ, radio host, and producer based in Brooklyn, New York. He is most famous for his success on the music charts, including his hit single, 'On the Dancefloor,' which peaked at #67 in the UK Singles Chart in 1994, and his Grammy-nominated track 'Caught Up,' which earned the number one spot on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart in 2002 and was later featured on the Showtime series 'Queer as Folk' in 2006. Disciple has also earned his way to the top in the world of remixes, and won an ARIA music award in Australia for his remix of producer Steven Allkins, aka Love Tattoo's hit, 'The Bass Has Got Me Movin.'Disciple grew up with music in his genes. His father played piano with Miles Davis and his brother slapped bass for George Benson. Disciple got his start as a gospel DJ and, staying true to his religious roots, coined his name as a constant reminder that 'only what you do for Christ shall last'. He started his professional career in 1987 when he worked as a radio host and mixer for WNYE FM, and quickly gained a loyal following of listeners. In the 90's, he hosted 'The Best Kept Secret', a mix show also on WNYE (FM), where he spun the hottest new underground tracks from rising artists. From there, he moved on to touring as a DJ in 1992 with his eyes set on global success.Disciple started out strong, and his first professional DJ gig was at the famous Studio 54 in New York. After that, Discple moved onto playing in the UK. As he traveled, his fan base quickly grew in size and diversity. By the time he debuted his first single on Muzik Pushers in 1993, his career was well on its way to the top. Dimitri Antek (Dzmitry Hrybouski) is a producer and DJ from Belarus. Dzmitry's musical career began in 2012 with school discos, then the advances in the sequencer followed. A few years later, in 2014, the first success came, a segment of the track 'Wak' hit the radio show on Radio Record. In 2015 the joint track with Sensi (aka Gotlucky) 'Bumblebee' was released, which received great support of Radio Record residents. In the next few years, the producer released 3 solo works, one of which was played on air of the largest radio of the Russian Federation - Record. In summer 2020, the label Big Tunes Records Dimitri Antek, in collaboration with Mike Funn, released the track 'Desire.' The duo continued to work and in June 2021 the release of 'I'm On My Way' took place, having Musata Music this time as a label for performers. Since 2022, he has changed direction and is releasing music in the Tech House genre, which supported Dj's From Mars, Greg Dela and other famous artists.The career of the disc jockey is rich in performances in several metropolitan clubs and bars in Belarus, such as: Titan, Coyote, Ice Bar, City Room, Champagne and others. Hailing from San Francisco, California, Brian is intimately familiar with how house music has swept over the United States for more than two decades. While the technophile makes his living integrating systems and solving technology problems, his home away from home resides distinctly set behind his MacBook and his Pioneer DJ DDJ-SR2 controller. Brian has instigated many a groove at various venues around the globe, from Vancouver to Palm Springs, Los Angeles to Atlanta, New York to Toronto. He makes regular appearances in San Francisco, of course -- doing what he can to maintain a busy life style set around friends, music, and constant exploration.'It's a bit of a challenge, but one I thoroughly enjoy' says the young DJ. 'San Francisco is uniquely positioned -- we are not only a destination for traveling artists and musicians: we are also artists and musicians ourselves. The real question is, how involved do you want to get?'By college, Brian was sneaking out of his dorm to play underground parties with his friends. It wasn't the anthem style club tunes that marked the charts at the time -- no, hallmarks of the evening were hard-to-find white labels from local record shops. Brian and Aaron Robinson held practice sessions for hours some weekends, before welcoming in throngs of friends and family to dance the night away.As Brian's skills took shape, it wasn't long before he found a friend in Orlando-originated DJ Mark Snyder. Now residing in the UK because of advances in career, Mark rounded out Brian's catalog with legendary tracks from Sasha and John Digweed. As Brian and Mark's friendship grew, they began to throw house parties together. House parties turned in to club parties -- and this continued until Brian made the move to San Francisco to explore even more music and friendship.In 2011, Brian worked with other local DJs to create the Rocket Collective - a fellowship of DJs raising monies for better sound experiences at the Burning Man art festival in Black Rock City, Nevada. He relates the tale fondly: 'we had Trevor Sigler and David Sternesky -- two amazing, young, talented guys who would constantly create new and different mixes for us to use live! And of course, we would have all original acts booked with help from Mat Dos Santos.' The troupe toured for nearly a year before retiring the project, and setting about their own creative paths.2015 has proven to be a peak year for the young performer, with performances at Toronto Pride alongside Dave Aude, San Diego Pride for Bearracuda, Vancouver Pride for Ruff, and Atlanta Bear Pride as well. Brian was also selected from a host of world-renowned DJs to perform in the Underground Lounge for the legendary Real Bad party, a true honor given the history and support around the event. As for global recognition, Brian continues his regular collaboration and with Vincent Keith's Mascular Magazine to keep his distinct, recognizable sound available to communities the world over. more

This is DJ Damo, otherwise known as Damian Holt, amenable, dedicated, entrepreneurial face who brought 'Easy' to west Wales. Quite quickly, on meeting him you'll see how switched on he is, almost hungry to get on with whatever needs getting on with. If he promises to get something done for you, he'll deliver - early - with bells on. In the early to mid 90's Hip-hop and trance was the order of the day for the then teenage west walian, who only stepped up to house music having dusted off his decks at the turn of the millennium. In those days you would have found him almost daily, warring down the carpet at Floorfillers in Swansea, competing and winning for dibs on the latest prommo's adding to his already overweight collection every few days.Consequently he doesn't travel lightly you'll see him at his gigs with an arsenal of records capable of bombing any punter hoping to hear the top ten. Indeed Damo, tends to bring almost his entire collection with him. 'I never want to be in a position where I want to play a record that I haven't brought that night, because you never know, I really might want to play it, and it's sat at home'. He's always prepared; prepared to play to the spirit of his audience. And that's his intention:'I'll plan the first and last track, everything in-between is pieced together as I play, once you start performing you hit an intensity that you couldn't achieve playing at home. The atmosphere of a gig influences you like nothing else, I'll put tracks together that I wouldn't have dreamed of had I been mixing at home'. His break came at Indigo's bank holiday party in August 2002, where he played outdoors to a crowd of 800 people after only six months back behind the decks. On a mid-summer evening after four hours of constant music, Damo effectively kicked off the second half by briefly bringing silence to the venueslowly re-igniting the party with Black Out 'Gotta have hope' the theme to Space Odyssey 2001, with an undercurrent of funky baselines. This bold move earned him his stripes and an invitation from local 'face' Ed Kurno to join Easy firstly in Swansea and later establishing and running the Llanelli night himselfAs with other creative outlets, the headphones are a gateway to another galaxy where everyday worries and concerns are firmly locked away. 'Performing gives you such a buzz, it's my idea of escapism, using your skills, knowledge and technical ability to create a bond with the crowd, I'm sure other DJ's get this feeling'.However on to more recent times and you will find Damo too has progressed, and now can travel lighter..... Well slightly lighter, with the use of cd's and CDJ's. ' Even though cd's are lighter i still find myself bringing everything i own just in case, but not only cd's i still bring the odd piece of vinyl that i haven't yet put on to cd!'Wow!! How things have changed from my 1st ever Bio!! Things progressed well from when this was written. I started my own night along with Ed Kurno called Temporary Insanity, held in Cafe Mambo every other Saturday. This went on for several months before I started another night called In Our House with long time friend Steve Thomas. We played most Played venues in Swansea, had bookings in Cardiff, Bristol and Reading before landing a gig at the infamous CroBar!!This then led to my 1st residency, not at Crobar though, I was lucky enough to have Nic Lawson in attendance that night. Nic was a resident in the mighty Escape Club and within two weeks my self and Steve were residents too at our Home from Home, the Escape Club.That brings you up to date in the world of Dj Damo. Keep and ear out for him, you won't be disappointed I assure you. more
