Gioachino Rossini (Pésaro, Italia, 1792- Paris, 1868). Desde los seis años perteneció a la banda municipal en la cual se destacó por sus aptitudes musicales. Fue así que a los dieciséis años ganó un premio por una cantata de su composición. Entre sus obras más destacadas se encuentra 'El barbero de Sevilla' que, junto a otras piezas, le dio fama mundial. En 1829 escribió su última ópera. Presentamos la obertura de la ópera 'Guillermo Tell', última composición de Rossini, en la interpretación de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería. Esta ópera se estrenó en París en 1829. La obertura, dividida en cuatro partes, es el fragmento más famoso de la obra. Esta versión se grabó en vivo en la Sala Nezahualcóyotl del Centro Cultural Universitario, en 2013, en el marco del Concierto de apertura del ciclo Fundación UNAM bajo la dirección de Carlo Ponti como invitado. Richard Wagner (Leipzig, Alemania, 1813-Venecia, Italia, 1883). Compositor, poeta, dramaturgo y director de orquesta. Autor de 'El holandés errante', la tetralogía 'El anillo del nibelungo' y 'Tristán e Isolda', entre otras óperas. Su búsqueda por lograr una 'obra de arte total' revolucionó la forma de pensar las artes escénicas; sus óperas rompieron con las estructuras tradicionales del lenguaje musical. 'Los maestros cantores de Núremberg' es la única comedia en el repertorio de Wagner y fue estrenada en Munich el 21 de junio de 1868, siete años después de que el autor iniciara la escritura del libreto. El personaje principal de la trama, Walther, es un joven caballero que participa en las populares competencias de música y poesía de la ciudad de Núremberg para ganar el amor de Eva, la hija de un joyero. Juan Arturo Brennan reconoce la naturaleza festiva y alegre de 'Los maestros cantores de Núremberg' y sobre la obertura señala que 'ha sido, desde su creación, una gran favorita en las salas de concierto y (…) está llena de música marcial, solemne, pomposa y de estilo procesional'. Este concierto, interpretado por la Orquesta Sinfónica de la UNAM bajo la dirección de Jan Latham-Koenig, fue grabado en vivo el 10 y 11 de marzo de 2012 en la Sala de Conciertos Nezahualcóyotl del Centro Cultural Universitario. Gerardo Kleinburg (Ciudad de México, 1964) fue director de la Compañía Nacional de Ópera, del Festival Internacional Cervantino, de la Casa del Lago y de Literatura en la Coordinación de Difusión Cultural de la UNAM. Ha sido crítico musical, articulista y columnista en diversos medios y obtuvo el Premio Internacional de Crítica Musical del Festival de Salzburgo en 1991. Actualmente, entre otras cosas, imparte las charlas introductorias a las transmisiones operísticas que realiza la UNAM. 'Así empezó todo', inicia Kleinburg en la primera entrega de esta serie, en la que comparte con el escucha los orígenes de la ópera, que es en sí una suma de artes desarrollada en plena Florencia renacentista con influencias directas del teatro griego. Más allá de un interesante contexto histórico, Kleinburg expone nociones de esta expresión artística y las acerca de una manera tan coloquial y tan fácil de digerir como hacer un símil de ésta con el rap. The Perfect Wagnerite: A Commentary on the Niblung's Ring (originally published London, 1898) is a philosophical commentary on Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, by the Irish writer George Bernard Shaw. Shaw offered it to those enthusiastic admirers of Wagner who 'were unable to follow his ideas, and do not in the least understand the dilemma of Wotan.' He interprets the Ring in Marxian terms as an allegory of the collapse of capitalism from its internal contradictions. Musicologically, his interpretation is noteworthy for its perception of the change in aesthetic direction beginning with the final scene of Siegfried, in which he claimed that the cycle turns from Musikdrama back towards opera. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Salzburgo, 1756-Viena, 1791). Compositor, director de orquesta y pianista. Considerado uno de los grandes exponentes del Clasicismo y uno de los más importantes compositores de la música de concierto del mundo occidental. Desde temprana edad demostró virtuosismo en el dominio de ciertos instrumentos. A los cuatro años, ya practicaba el clavicordio y a los diecisiete fue contratado como músico en la corte en su ciudad natal. En 1971 se instaló en Viena, ciudad en la cual desarrolló el resto de su carrera. Su vasta obra comprende diversos géneros musicales como sinfonías, conciertos para piano y para violín, divertimentos, música de cámara, adagios, serenatas y óperas. 'El director de teatro' o también llamada 'El empresario', la obra cuya obertura se reproduce a continuación, es un Singspiel o una ópera breve, de un acto, basada en el libreto del escritor Gottlieb Stephanie. Dicha composición fue resultado de un concurso propuesto por el emperador José II a Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart y a Antonio Salieri. Éste último resultó ganador ya que como músico de la corte gozaba de los favores del emperador. El estreno se llevó a cabo en Viena en 1786 y la trama aborda las vicisitudes de un montaje de teatro. El concierto fue grabado en vivo en la Sala Nezahualcóyotl del Centro Cultural Universitario, el 9 y 10 de agosto de 2008 en la interpretación de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería. The Pirates of Penzance; or, The Slave of Duty is a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. The story concerns Frederic, who, having completed his 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and the two young people fall instantly in love. Frederic finds out, however, that he was born on 29 February, and so, technically, he only has a birthday each leap year. His apprenticeship indentures state that he remains apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday, and so he must serve for another 63 years. Bound by his own sense of duty, Frederic's only solace is that Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully. Pandora's Box (1904) (Die Büchse der Pandora) is a play by the German dramatist Frank Wedekind. It forms the second part of his pairing of 'Lulu' plays (the first is Earth Spirit [1895]), both of which depict a society 'riven by the demands of lust and greed'. G. W. Pabst directed a silent film version (Pandora's Box), which was loosely based on the play, in 1929. Both plays together also formed the basis for the opera Lulu by Alban Berg in 1935 (premiered posthumously in 1937). In the original manuscript, dating from 1894, the 'Lulu' drama was in five acts and subtitled 'A Monster Tragedy'. Wedekind subsequently divided the work into two plays: Earth Spirit (German: Erdgeist, first printed in 1895) and Pandora's Box (German: Die Büchse der Pandora). It is now customary in theatre performances to run the two plays together, in abridged form, under the title Lulu. Wedekind is known to have taken his inspiration from at least two sources: the pantomime Lulu by Félicien Champsaur, which he saw in Paris in the early 1890s, and the sex murders of Jack the Ripper in London in 1888. The premiere of Pandora's Box, a restricted performance due to difficulties with the censor, took place in Nuremberg on 1 February 1904. The 1905 Viennese premiere, again restricted, was instigated by the satirist Karl Kraus. In Vienna Lulu was played by Tilly Newes, later to become Wedekind's wife, with the part of Jack the Ripper played by Wedekind himself.
