 It has been 50 years since the Administration of Richard Nixon.  In that time, the left has waged a war on history to define Richard Nixon as a failure as President. For much of the half century Richard Nixon's name was synonymous with corruption and Government overreach.  Podcasts, Documentaries, Cable Network specials have all controlled a narrative that cast Richard Nixon as the 20th centuries great American Villain. But all of that has changed. First in 2013, Geoff Shepard, Richard Nixon's youngest Watergate Defense team member, petitioned the National Archives for access to sealed Watergate materials. What he found was a treasure of exculpatory material that has sent shock waves throughout the world of serious historians and legal scholars. Was there more to the story of Watergate? The documentation he exposed certainly seems to say so and that is not the only area where scholars are finding that there was way more to Richard Nixon's tenure than had ever been appreciated. Richard Nixon worked to protect civil rights, advance women in government, protect the environment, set new higher standards for workforce safety, share revenues with local government, restructure the inner workings of the Federal Government, with plans to make it work more efficiently and more effectively and he even worked to provide a better healthcare and welfare system some 40 years ahead of his time.  He opened up women's sports, lowered the voting age, ushered in an era of Judicial restraint, desegregated the Southern School system, poured millions into entrepreneurial programs for minorities,  passed tough laws on organized crime, ended the draft and passed billions of dollars into cancer research that has led to most of the advances against the wide variety of deadly diseases we see today. And that list does not even get into the Foreign Policy achievements we associate with his incredible five and a half years as President. We thought it was time to tell that story and over the next year and half we will tell that story on this podcast.  The story of the experience of a nation, at war in Vietnam, and often under siege, and at war  with  itself, here at home.  An experience that created a great gash in the body politic that we are still healing from today. It is the story of the man who saved our Union from the growing disaster an upheaval experienced in this era. The story of the experience of a nation as it wrestled with titanic changes in culture, the experience of a nation ripped from its foundations, and the experience of the historic leader that set that nation back on course to its rightful place as the beacon of light for freedom and prosperity to a troubled world . Vol. I: The Colonial Period. Charles Austin Beard was the most influential American historian of the early 20th century. He published hundreds of monographs, textbooks and interpretive studies in both history and political science. He graduated from DePauw University in 1898, where he met and eventually married Mary Ritter Beard, one of the founders of the first Greek-letter society for women, Kappa Alpha Theta. Many of his books were written in collaboration with his wife, whose own interests lay in feminism and the labor union movement (Woman as a Force in History, 1946).In 1921, Charles and Mary Beard published their History of the United States. A contemporaneous review stated: 'The authors… assume enough maturity in high school students to justify a topical rather than a chronological treatment. They have dealt with movements, have sketched large backgrounds, have traced causes, and have discussed the interrelation of social and economic forces and politics. All this has been directed to the large purpose of helping the student to understand American today in all its national characteristics and as part of world civilization as well…The literary style is exceptionally clear and crisp, and the whole approach…is thought producing. As a textbook or handbook for the average citizen it ranks with very best.' more

For American journalist and humorist Edgar Wilson Nye who wrote under the pen name Bill Nye in the late 19th century, facts are not to be presented in their newborn, bare state. They should be properly draped and embellished before they can be presented before the public. Hence, in the Comic History of the United States published in 1894, he gives his readers the facts. But in a bid to make the historical figures more human he describes them as 'people who ate and possibly drank, people who were born, flourished and died, not grave tragedians posing perpetually for their photographs.' Nye was educated in rural Wisconsin and moved to Wyoming to study law. His light-hearted, flippant takes on the serious questions of the day became extremely popular and he moved into journalism. Later, he established his own newspaper, the Laramie Boomerang.Beginning with the discovery of America, a chapter in which he describes Queen Isabella and her advocacy of Christopher Columbus' famous voyage in lighter vein, Bill Nye takes a tongue in cheek look at Balboa, Cortez and the discovery of moonshine whiskey. He further delves into such serious matters as the Drawbacks of Being a Colonist, The Personality of Washington, The Dutch at New Amsterdam, The American Civil War and its alleged causes and the final Reconstruction by Johnson and Grant.Nye maintains his sly humor and irreverence for honored figures like Stonewall Jackson, Generals Lee, Grant and Sherman, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and others. Bill Nye's technique of taking hold of the facts and dressing them up with his own brand of playful banter is quite amusing and entertaining. The Comic History of the United States is quite appealing to readers of all ages, especially when they know the 'real facts.' However, present day readers may find some of the passages and Bill Nye's remarks quite offensive and politically incorrect for the more enlightened times we now live in. His remarks on African Americans and American Indians can be quite jarring. The Comic History of the United States can become a platform for discussing attitudes and perspectives that were present in the last century.Besides being a journalist and humor writer, Bill Nye was also very popular on the lecture circuit and regaled audiences all over the country with his humorous speeches. In today's time, he would probably be regarded as a standup comedian and as such, his views would certainly not be taken as grounds for an offense. more

Brigadier General (Retired) Richard B. DixIn July of 2017 BG Dix retired with more than 30 years of service in the Armed Forces, as a leader at every level. He is a native of Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from Armor Officer Basic Course in 1987. After graduation, he served as Tank Platoon Leader, A Company, 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor, 24th Infantry Division. He later served as the Executive Officer for A Company, Headquarters Command, 224th Forward Support Battalion during Operation Desert Shield/Storm. BG Dix deployed to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; where he served as the BDE S-4 FWD during Operation Desert Defiance. Upon redeployment, he served as the Chief of Supply and Services 32nd ADCOM G 4. BG Dix later served in Germany in the 21st Theater Support Command (TSC). He also served as the Deputy Chief of Plans and Exercises G-3, 21st TSC, Group S-3, 29th Support Group (SG), Support Operations Officer 200th Material Management Center, Brigade Executive Officer 29th SG. He also served in Germany as the 29th SG Rear Group Commander during the unit's successful deployment as the Joint Logistics Command (JLC) for Combined Joint Task Force-76 (CJTF-76), Afghanistan Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF VI). BG Dix served as the 3-401st Army Field Support Battalion Commander from Feb 06 to Jun 07, Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF VII). From Jul 07 to Jun 08, BG Dix served as the Aide-ed-Camp to the Commanding General, Army Material Command, Fort Belvoir, Virginia. From Jul 09 to Jul 10, BG Dix commanded the 401st Army Field Support Brigade (AFSB) in Bagram, Afghanistan. From Jul 10 to Jul 12, he served as the Chief of Staff for the Army Sustainment Command. BG Dix served as the Executive Officer and the Director of Strategy and Integration G-45/7 for the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army, G-4, from Jul 12 to May 14. BG Dix served as Commanding General for Defense Logistics Agency Distribution responsible for Dept. of Defense's Global Storage and Distribution, from June 14 to June 16. BG Dix closed out his career as the Joint Munitions Command, Rock Island IL, Commanding General June 16 to July 17. BG Dix graduated from the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where he also received a Master of Arts in Procurement and Acquisition Management from Webster University. He is a 2009 graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Fort McNair, Washington, D.C. In 1987, he graduated from South Carolina State University's Army ROTC Program (Distinguished Military Graduate) with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing. BG Dix is married to the former Cynthia Diane Fields of Jacksonville Fl. The couple has two children and two grandchildren. more
