In introducing the English version of this book I venture to bespeak a welcome for it, not only for the light which it throws on some little-known incidents of the South African war, but also because of the keen personal interest of the events recorded. It is more than a history. It is a dramatic picture of the hopes and fears, the devotion and bitterness with which some patriotic women in Pretoria watched and, as far as they could, took part in the war which was slowly drawing to its conclusion on the veld outside.I do not associate myself with the opinions expressed by the writer as to the causes of the war or the methods adopted to bring it to an end, or as to the policy which led to the Concentration Camps, and the causes of the terrible mortality which prevailed during the first months of their existence. On these matters many readers will hold different opinions from the writer, or will prefer to let judgment be in suspense and to look to the historian of the future for a final verdict. We are still too near the events to be impartial. But this book does not challenge or invite controversy. Fortunately for South Africa, most of us on both sides can now discuss the events of the war without bitterness and understand and respect the feelings of those who were most sharply divided by these events from ourselves.The greater part of the narrative comes from a diary kept during the war with unusual fullness and vividness. The difficulty experienced by the writer of the diary in communicating to friends outside Pretoria information about what was passing inside, and in unburdening herself of the feelings roused in her by the events of the war, made the diary more than usually intimate. To understand fully many of the narratives which have been transferred from it to this book, it must be remembered that one is reading, not something written from memory years after the event, but rather the record of a conversation at the time, in which the diarist is describing the events as if to a friend who shares to the full all her own feelings and to whom she can speak without reserve.Much has happened in the ten years which have passed since the end of the war. The country which was distracted by the conflicting ideals and interests of its different Governments and peoples has become the Union of South Africa. It is now one State. Considered 'the greatest fighter pilot', embraced as a 'hero' and 'King of the Few' by the embattled island of Britain and its King, but considered a traitor by many in his own country. Born in 1910 in Wellington, South Africa, Group Captain A.G. 'Sailor' Malan would fight three battles in his life.The first would end in victory against Germany in the skies over England and Europe. The second would end in defeat as he took on South Africa's apartheid government. The third would end in death as Parkinson's Disease cut short a full, promising, yet humble life at only 52.He would be denied a military funeral in his home country, be vilified by his own government for his opposition to them, and only be acknowledged in South Africa three decades after apartheid had come to an end and sixty years after his death.One of Sailor Malan's 10 Rules of Air Fighting was 'to always turn and face the attack'. The Boer Wars were a series of two conflicts between the British Empire and the Boer republics of the Transvaal and the Orange Free State in Southern Africa in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The first Boer War took place from 1880-1881, while the second Boer War lasted from 1899-1902. These wars were the result of longstanding tensions and rivalries between the British colonial authorities and the Boer settlers, who were of Dutch, German, and Huguenot descent. The First Boer War:The immediate trigger for the First Boer War was the British annexation of the Transvaal in 1877, which the Boers strongly resisted as a violation of their independence.The war began when the Boers launched a surprise attack on the British garrison at Potchefstroom in December 1880, sparking a broader conflict.After several decisive Boer victories, the British were forced to recognize the independence of the Transvaal Republic through the Treaty of Pretoria in 1881.The Second Boer War:Tensions reignited in the 1890s as the British sought to gain more political and economic control over the Boer republics, which were becoming increasingly prosperous due to the Witwatersrand gold rush.The immediate trigger was the Jameson Raid in 1895, an unsuccessful attempt by British colonial forces to overthrow the Transvaal government.When the Boers issued an ultimatum demanding British withdrawal from the region, the British refused, leading the Boers to launch a preemptive attack in October 1899.The Boers achieved early successes, besieging key British garrisons, but the superior industrial and military might of the British Empire eventually prevailed.The war ended in 1902 with the Treaty of Vereeniging, which incorporated the Boer republics into the British South African colonies.In summary, the two Boer Wars were driven by longstanding tensions over land, resources, and political control between the British Empire and the fiercely independent Boer settlers. While the Boers achieved some initial victories, the British were ultimately able to defeat them through superior military force and resources. These conflicts laid the groundwork for the subsequent unification of South Africa under British rule. more
