Ron Stockton was a professor of political science at the University of Michigan-Dearborn for 48 years. His specialty was non-western politics and political change. He taught classes on the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, Religion and Politics, the Politics of Revolution, Non-Western politics, and American politics. He also taught in the Honors Program, focusing upon foundational readings from the 18th and 19th centuries. He has an interest in religion and politics and in the role of religio-ethnic groups in the political system. Les relations entre Orient arabe et Occident en constituent toujours l'axe principal. Des thématiques telles que le suivi de trajectoires nationales (Égypte, Syrie, Palestine), les relations internationales, bilatérales (Palestine et Égypte ; Syrie et France) ou multilatérales (France et pays de la Méditerranée) restent au cœur de la production scientifique de la chaire. Ces problématiques sont traitées sous différents angles et notamment par le recours à une histoire globale de la Méditerranée, une histoire des Arabes et des musulmans en France, une histoire des dynamiques du pouvoir dans le monde arabe, la fabrique de la diplomatie entre l'Orient arabe et l'Occident, la question de la « frontiérisation » du monde au XIXe siècle ainsi qu'une saisie des cultures politiques arabes en s'appuyant sur la littérature mémorielle arabe. Des productions scientifiques sont déjà publiées ou sont en cours de publication sur l'ensemble de ces thématiques.L'enseignement constitue une composante principale des activités de la chaire et a permis de couvrir, au sein du Collège de France, la totalité de la question de Palestine de la fin du XVIIIe siècle jusqu'au début de notre siècle, l'Europe et le monde musulman au XIXe siècle et l'évolution des provinces arabes de l'Empire ottoman au XIXe siècle. Il fait ses classes préparatoires littéraires au lycée Louis-le-Grand de 1973 à 1976 et commence l'étude de l'arabe cette même année. En 1977-1978, il fait son service national au Proche-Orient. En 1979, il obtient le Diplôme d'études avancées (DEA) à Paris-Sorbonne, l'agrégation d'histoire l'année suivante et en 1981 la thèse de IIIe cycle et le diplôme de l'Inalco en arabe littéral.En 1981-1982, il est boursier à l'Institut d'études arabes de Damas et enseignant à l'université du Caire en 1982-1983. De 1983 à 1990, il est agrégé faisant fonction d'assistant d'histoire contemporaine, université de Paris-Sorbonne. En 1989, il soutient sa thèse d'État. En 1990, il passe maître de conférences à Paris-Sorbonne et en 1991 il devient professeur à l'Inalco.De septembre 2001 à 2003, il est successivement directeur du centre d'études et de recherches sur le Moyen-Orient contemporain (CERMOC) à Beyrouth puis directeur scientifique de l'Institut français du Proche-Orient.En 2003, il prend ses fonctions au Collège de France à la chaire Histoire contemporaine du monde arabe. more
