Through guest interviews, poem breakdowns, and honest discussions about open mics, showcases, and the overall culture of this art form, Poetry as Usual pulls back the curtain on what it truly means to live life through the spoken word. In essence, this is the politics of poetry. more

With millions of downloads, hundreds of hours of soundtracked content, and an overall emphasis on the cultural history behind famous works of literature, Literature and History is one of the most popular independent podcasts on its subject. Starting with Sumerian cuneiform in 3,100 BCE, Literature and History moves forward in chronological order through Assyriology, Egyptology, the Old Testament, Ancient Greece and Rome, the birth of Christianity, and the early Middle Ages. The show's current season is on early Islamic history. A typical episode (they average about two hours) features a general introduction to a work of literature, then a full summary of that work that expects no prior knowledge, and finally, an analysis of the cultural, biographical, and historical forces that gave rise to the work in question. Original symphonic and ambient background music is woven throughout each show, and all episodes offer free full, illustrated, footnoted transcriptions as well as quizzes for purposes of review. The show has no advertisements, and its host takes pride in a professional approach that avoids chitchat and ephemera and gets straight to the educational content. You can listen to the episodes in any order, although most listeners begin at the beginning and proceed from there, as the podcast itself is chronologically organized. Doug Metzger finished his Ph.D. in literature in 2011. His chief scholarly interest, following his dissertation work, continues to be 19th-century realism and postbellum American philosophy. more

Where rhyme gets its reason! In a historical survey of English literature, I take a personal and philosophical approach to the major texts of the tradition in order to not only situate the poems, prose, and plays in their own contexts, but also to show their relevance to our own. This show is for the general listener: as a teacher of high school literature and philosophy, I am less than a scholar but more than a buff. I hope to edify and entertain! more

Over the centuries, poets have reminded us of the values we are in danger of forgetting as a society. The ideas of liberty, equality, fraternity and justice — the very values enshrined in our Constitution — have endured over centuries in the Bhakti tradition. The Bhakti poets always challenged the ideologies of their times that attempted to force the belief that people were not equal. In this show, we explore the histories of these ideas in Bhakti poetry, and how they find resonance in the values underpinning the Constitution of a modern republic. We take you on a listening experience to Pandharpur with the songs of Namdev and Tukaram, to Benares with the poetry of Kabir and Ravidas, to Rajasthan in the rapture of Meera's devotion, and to northern Karnataka where sharanas sing the vachanas. But first, we visit post-Independence Bombay where the expression of these ideas find an avenue in the film music of the times.Bhakti Republic is hosted by Amit Basole, faculty in Economics at Azim Premji University, where he also heads the Centre for Sustainable Employment. Basole has also hosted Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota - The World of Ghalib for Radio Azim Premji University.CREDITS:Akshay Ramuhalli, Bijoy Venugopal, Bruce Lee Mani, Narayan Krishnaswamy, Prashant Vasudevan, Riju R Krishna, Seema Seth, Shraddha Gautam, Supriya Joshi and Velu ShankarAcknowledgements:A special thanks to Atif Anwar, Omkar Deshmukh, Seema Hussain, S Pranesh (students at Azim Premji University) more

This podcast program is my personal effort to address ideas that have shaped human history as expressed in poetry, speeches, myths and documents. The programs will be posted weekly or more frequently depending on their content and the work involvedMostly, but not always, the topics deal with what some people might describe as serious issues, which some might find depressing, unduly taxing on their concentration or offensive to their present world view. Such people are probably better to give this program a miss. The program necessarily addresses existential, political, historical, philosophical, sociological and scientific issues of my choosing and no doubt, loaded with my personal biases. The purpose of is to encourage or facilitate people to think about the issues presented, for which I offer no apology for those who are offended. Some of the literatures (poems, speeches, myths and documents) are also very long, which makes the oral presentation difficult and causes errors. It also can tax the concentration and interest of readers. For that reason, I have sometimes read only part of the relevant literature and summarised the content of the excised parts. more
