Gunsmoke was a long-running old-time radio and television Western drama program set in Dodge City, Kansas during the settlement of the American West. The radio show first aired on April 26, 1952 and ran until June 18, 1961 on the CBS radio network. The series starred William Conrad as Marshal Matt Dillon, Howard McNear as Doc Charles Adams, Georgia Ellis as Kitty Russell, and Parley Baer as Deputy Chester Proudfoot. Doc's first name and Chester's last name were changed for the television program. Gunsmoke was notable for its critically acclaimed cast and writing and is commonly regarded as one of the finest old time radio shows. Some listeners have argued that the radio version of Gunsmoke was far more realistic than the television program. Episodes were aimed at adults and featured some of the most explicit content of the day: there were violent crimes and scalping's, massacres and opium addicts. Miss Kitty's occupation as a prostitute was made far more obvious on the radio version than on television. Many episodes ended on a down-note, and villains often got away with their crimes. more

Dragnet was created and produced by Jack Webb, who starred as the terse Sgt. Friday. He achieved both goals, and Dragnet remains a key influence on subsequent police dramas in many media. Challenge of the Yukon was a long-running radio series that began on Detroit's station WXYZ (as had The Lone Ranger and The Green Hornet), and an example of a Northern genre story. The series was first heard on February 3, 1938.The program was an adventure series about Sergeant William Preston of the Northwest Mounted Police and his lead sled dog, Yukon King, as they fought evildoers in the Northern wilderness during the Gold Rush of the 1890s. Preston, according to radio historian Jim Harmon, first joined the Mounties to capture his father's killer, and when he was successful he was promoted to Sergeant. Preston worked under the command of Inspector Conrad, and in the early years was often assisted by a French-Canadian guide named Pierre. more

These radio shows, together with his movies and television shows helped make him one of the all-time most popular heroes of western fiction and cinema. His popularity continues to grow each year, as generations new and old delight in the classic tales of this American hero. more

Boston Blackie was created by writer Jack Boyle as a jewel thief and safecracker with a heart of gold. The character was featured in nine silent films. In 1941, Blackie returned to film in the era of talkies. Much like the Saint , the character reformed from a thief into a detective. Blackie was always Inspector Farraday's prime suspect in any major crime. The films were very popular with fourteen films made starring Chester Morris. Morris brought Blackie to the radio in a summer replacement radio series for NBC in 1944. Then in 1945, first-run syndication king Frederick Ziv created a new series starring Broadway Actor Richard Kollmar as Blackie and featuring the best talent in New York radio. The series was the most successful first-run syndication program of its era, producing 288 episodes of which at least 190 are in circulation.Ziv took the series to television in 1951 for two syndicated series featuring Kent Taylor as Blackie. Throughout his many iterations in the 1940s, Blackie remained a clever crime-solver whose past gave him a slight edge and made him a bit of a lovable rogue who fought on the side of the angels. He was the type of guy you wanted in your corner when the chips were down. 'Enemy to those who make him an enemy. Friend to those who have no friend.' Tales of the Texas Rangers, a western adventure old-time radio drama, premiered on July 8, 1950, on the US NBC radio network and remained on the air through September 14, 1952. Movie star Joel McCrea starred as Texas Ranger Jayce Pearson, who used the latest scientific techniques to identify the criminals and his faithful horse, Charcoal, to track them down. The shows were reenactments of actual Texas Ranger cases.The series was produced by Screen Gems and directed by Stacy Keach, Sr., and was sponsored for part of its run by Wheaties.Captain Manuel T. 'Lone Wolf' Gonzaullas, a Ranger for 30 years and who was said to have killed 31 men during his career, served as consultant for the series.This show was one of the more successful radio shows of the early1950′s, airing for 3 years. Mystery is My Hobby came to air as Murder is My Hobby, a title with an amusing double meaning. However, after 34 weeks, the series gained a sponsor the Benefit Life Insurance Company of Omaha, Nebraska. They didn't like the name. So thus it was changed.The series starred Glenn Langan as Mystery Writer Barton Drake, who teams up each week with Inspector Noah Danton to solve the weekly puzzle. At the end of each episode, Drake is sure to work in his catchphrase, 'Murder/Mystery is My Hobby.' Beyond these basic facts, the series is an unsolved mystery. The episodes that circulate among fans are from the Syndicated series and all include the, 'Mystery is My Hobby' tag rather than 'Murder is My Hobby.' Various websites will give dates ranging from 1945-51 for the series' airing. However, newspaper logs from the Digital Deli confirm that Murder is My Hobby premiered in 1945 over the Mutual Network. Beyond that, we don't know how long the series aired or what order episodes aired in for syndication. Confusing this is information in the Radio Gold index logs which show that the show used the same episodes repeatedly in different syndication packages, so even though there's an episode #135, we don't know if there were 135 episodes made.This makes the series difficult to research and nearly impossible to date. However, the episodes are self-contained and lack continuity so they don't have to be listened to in any particular order.
