Staten Island is often written off as 'the forgotten borough' and the 'red borough.' Staten Island is the only Borough in New York City that voted for Donald Trump by significant margins. What is often not reported or given any significant attention is that Staten Island is a place with a diverse population. A racially diverse population and politically diverse population. It is the one place in New York City where the two parties genuinely compete for power in elections whereas every other borough is simply a contest between Democratic machine politics and the more progressive wing of the Democratic Party. A forgotten segment of the forgotten borough are the liberal and progressive Staten Islanders. The coverage and the local media caters to the Trumpiest elements of our borough while moderates, liberals, and progressives are often unrepresented and left voiceless. Staten Island Democrats have proved to be a viable force and we hold several state and city government offices and our DA, an islandwide position, is also a Democrat. Staten Island voted Democratic in 2012 when we voted for Barack Obama for President and in fact, Democrats outnumber Republicans by a wide margin in Staten Island by party registration.. This podcast would give Staten Island Democrats both progressive and moderate, a voice in national, state, city, and community wide issues that is lacking in our local newspaper and on social media. This podcast would also cast a wide net with guests and topics that would be discussed from all different angles and would give our liberal and democratic neighbors a place to call home within the current local media structure and a place to come out of the shadows and share their views with like minded neighbors. In addition, listeners who share progressive values in conservative parts of the country will be able to connect and resonate with the unique position of the hosts. Hosts Andrew Savage and Nanci Richards are two local Staten Island Democrats with a history of party leadership roles, progressive activism, and supporting candidates for local offices. Both public school teachers, one active and one retired, Andrew Savage, a lifelong Staten Island resident and a public school social studies teacher for 14 years has been a fixture in local Staten Island politics with previous stints as a member of the Democratic County Committee and as a board member, Vice President, and as the first openly gay President of the Young Democrats of Richmond County. Andrew enjoys comedy, wine, food, history, politics, and laughter. Nanci Richards, a lifelong Staten Islander, is a decorated social studies teacher, leader in the community, comedian, and dog lover. Nanci was a public school social studies teacher for over 25 years before retiring in 2021. Nanci's relatable and hilarious comedy has been featured at the Ladies of Laughter showcase and the International Fringe Festival. Nanci also won The Staten Island Advance's AWE Poll's funniest comedian award, and she was featured on ABC's 'The View.' Nanci's three solo comedy shows Pedagogy 1,2 has earned much praise and recognition for its humorous take on daily life at various stages of the teaching profession. Nanci is also an avid traveler exploring the world on her own terms and inspiring a love of travel in her students through many group trips to Europe, China, Japan, and to somber and inspiring locations such as Auschwitz and Hiroshima. The Seventies was a calamitous decade, a low point in the history of New York City. City Hall continually failed to balance budgets and turned to austerity, privatization, and sheer negligence when it came to running city services. Roads disintegrated, buildings and overpasses collapsed, garbage piled high, and crime ran rampant. The city literally crumbled under the weight of austerity. At the same time, underground culture surged with energy, from subway graffiti to experimental theater and gay bars. Musical artists embedded in the urban fabric turned to their craft with gusto. They formed loose networks of like-minded artists who made and appreciated particular styles of music. Their world during this period, at times, reflected the disintegrating cityscape. At other times, their music celebrated the social constraints let loose in a time of crisis, when the city seemed to be falling apart. Soundscapes is a podcast about how music created in New York has shaped the history of the city and how the city itself has been an incubator in which music has blossomed throughout its history. Shoe Leather is an investigative podcast that goes behind the scenes of forgotten stories that shaped New York City. This season we are looking at the aftermath of the killing of Amadou Diallo, an unarmed Black man who was shot by four white NYPD officers in the Bronx on February 4, 1999. In 2022, NYC Parks embarked on an oral history project to capture stories from more than 100 Parks employees about their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 changed New Yorkers' relationship with open space. This project aims to capture and preserve for the historical record this important slice of Parks history.The interviews captured what they did, saw, thought, learned, and hoped for as New Yorkers, public servants, and lovers and stewards of parks and open spaces. The interviews are raw, sincere, insightful, personal, painful, and funny—as unique as each person who participated in this project. Participants span entry level staff to the Commissioner. 'As you see, we're flying over an island. A city. A particular city. And this is a story of a number of people, and a story also of the city itself.'That's from the opening voice-over of the 1948 movie The Naked City, which was a very big deal when it was made, because it was a rare studio film that was shot entirely, lock stock and barrel, on the streets of New York City. You see, the American motion picture industry began in New York, at the end of the 19th century Thomas Edison and other early innovators had their laboratories here, and shot their early films in and around Manhattan. But the movies moved to California in the 1910s, and rarely came back. Plenty of films were set in New York… but astonishingly few were shot here. Studios constructed fake New Yorks on their Hollywood backlots; maybe, if they couldn't fake it, they'd shoot a scene or two in New York, or send a crew to shoot exteriors, or use stock footage. But that all changed with Executive Order No. 10, issued by Mayor John V. Lindsay on May 31, 1966. That document formed the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre & Broadcasting—a one-stop shop intended to eliminate the red tape and copious permits of New York filmmaking, and to lure filmmakers East. It worked - perhaps too well. The problem was, the explosion of production that followed the establishment of the Mayor's Office in the mid-1960s coincided directly with the beginning of the most troubled period of the city's history… a quarter-century of rising crime, increasing debt, decreases in public service and servants, and general urban anarchy. And that period was captured over the course of the next two decades, vividly, in the likes of Midnight Cowboy; The French Connection; Death Wish; Dog Day Afternoon; Taxi Driver; The Taking of Pelham 123, The Warriors; Fort Apache, The Bronx; Do the Right Thing; and After Hours—portraits of a city's decay and downfall, and ones that, ironically enough, might not have existed at all were it not for the incentives provided by the city itself. Now, from the safe distance of a Disney-fied and gentrified Manhattan, these films provide us with a window into a past that's been razed and replaced by a safer present. 9/11 took a toll on The City… so did the rise of income inequality, rendering New York City, more than ever, a place solely by and for the rich. That shift, and the rapid suburbanization that accompanied it, has left New York nearly indistinguishable from other large American cities. And thus these movies…. become a valuable reminder of what once was. And what we're witnessing, in the films made in New York, and set in the present, is a conversation of, of connections and reflections between the fictional lives in their foregrounds… and the real lives happening behind them. So in their own unique ways, every great New York movie is an accidental documentary of what The City was - at the precise point of its production, and not a moment longer. All of those movies, taken together, tell their own version of the history of New York. That's the history we're here to tell. more
