An adventurous children's novel, The Story of Doctor Dolittle is the first book in the Doctor Dolittle series. The novel depicts the many adventures of Dr. John Dolittle as he learns the language of animals and takes on various feats including exotic travel, a dangerous encounter with pirates, and a mission to set right from wrong. The novel begins with the introduction of Dr. John Dolittle, an animal lover and respected physician, who lives in the small English town of Puddleby-on-the-Marsh with his unmarried sister. Due to an increase in the number of animals in his home, he loses many of his clients which results in a decline of wealth. Even his sister is repelled from the amount of animals in their home. However, one day Dr. Dolittle learns the secret to speaking with animals from his parrot Polynesia, who teaches him the language of animals. Consequently, he leaves behind his unfulfilling job surrounded by people and instead decides to take up a veterinary practice. This career change proves to be the correct one, as Dr. Dolittle quickly becomes renowned throughout the animal kingdom. Eventually he finds himself on the way to Africa along with his most trusted animal companions to help cure a monkey epidemic. Yet, unfortunate events lead to a shipwreck and Dr. Dolittle and his animal friends are imprisoned by the king of Jolliginki, who is a victim of colonization and for this reason dislikes all Europeans. The protagonist and his escort undergo many adventures in their task to spread kindness and animal awareness throughout. An optimistic and heartwarming novel, The Story of Doctor Dolittle leaves no one feeling indifferent, as Dr. Dolittle risks losing everything including his house, family and wealth for the sake of proper care and love of animal life. However, it turned out to be his most famous one.In The Adventures.. Maya and her friends, Willy the Bee, Mrs Cassandra her teacher, Flip the Grasshopper, Alexander the Mouse, Thekla the Spider, Kurt the Dungbeetle and others form part of the group of creatures whose capers and mischief are charmingly portrayed. In the book, Maya is captured by a gang of villainous hornets and taken to their nest. During her imprisonment, she fortuitously overhears the hornets' plan to attack her own hive and destroy all the bees in it. How she foils the plans and earns the forgiveness of the bees for having run away in the beginning forms the rest of the story. Grown-ups and children can both enjoy this short but sweet book. There have been many critical analyses of The Adventures.. and some have seen it as a political allegory. The original edition contained quite a lot of violence and non-PC references to race and disabilities. However, this new edition has been revised and is free of these.The book has been adapted extensively for animated series, opera, video games and Maya the Bee merchandise is extremely popular among kids. more

A variety of amusing and exciting events follow as they plunge into a series of scrapes in search of a legendary lost treasure.Published in 1899, The Story of the Treasure Seekers by E Nesbit was her first children's novel. It has had an immense influence on children's literature and was reputedly JK Rowling's favorite children's book. Others like CS Lewis (Chronicles of Narnia) and many other British and American writers were inspired by The Story of the Treasure Seekers. Told from a child's point of view, the style is witty, amusing and interesting, making it the ideal read-aloud book for both parents and children.One of the interesting aspects of the book is that it is narrated by one of the children, but readers find out which one only towards the end. This child is priggish, arrogant and not always very smart, making his lofty observations and pronouncements even more funny as the reader can see through them quite easily! As with much of Victorian literature, there is plenty in the book that seems dated today. Additionally, E Nesbit's passionate interest in the Socialist ideology that she and her husband Hubert Bland espoused are subtly yet surely inserted into the conversations and plot of The Story of the Treasure Seekers. However, far from being a dull and depressing tale of do-gooder kids, the novel is often hilariously funny as the children cook up various Quixotic schemes to make money. The child narrator's voice is itself a piece of subversive humor, as he feels he is the smartest, most powerful person around, hurtling the children into various predicaments. They try speculation, becoming detectives, entering a writing competition among other zany adventures. All through, it is their courage, determination and sense of honor that shine through.The story has been successfully adapted to stage, screen and television several times. If you haven't encountered this children's classic yet, it's a riveting, droll read with an underlying message for those who would like to read between the lines! more

A children's fantasy novel first published in 1907, The Enchanted Castle recounts the marvelous adventures encountered by a curious group of children searching to enliven their summer holiday. Written in episodes, the novel has a different adventure in store for its young heroes in each chapter, including vibrant statues, banquets with Greek gods, and reunited lovers.The novel begins when siblings Gerald, James and Kathleen are required to spend their summer holiday in a boarding school, due to unfortunate events at home and are consequently left under the supervision of a French schoolmistress. The children seem to be sentenced to a summer of utter boredom, however, one day the children decide to explore the neighboring countryside in hopes of bringing excitement to their otherwise monotonous routine. During their time outside they stumble upon a secret passageway and follow its trail. When they emerge from the tunnel, they are engulfed by a castle situated in an elaborate garden, where they also meet a young girl Mabel, who declares she is a princess. Furthermore, Mabel claims that the castle is full of magic and leads them inside to show them its treasures, which includes a plain metal ring which supposedly causes invisibility. Naturally the children are skeptical and it is not until the ring actually does work and makes Mabel invisible, that they are swayed to believe the contrary. The four children panic and Mabel confesses that the country estate is not an enchanted castle and that she is simply the housekeeper's niece, and not a princess. However what seemed to be an innocent game of dress-up takes a turn of events as the group get thrown into a magical frenzy indicating the beginning of their exciting adventures and a step away from their expected mundane summer.Nesbit cleverly depicts the notion that one should be careful of what they wish for, because it just may come true, but never without a price. An engrossing tale of magic, fantasy, humor, and adventurous mishaps blended in an utmost imaginative way, the novel has remained a favorite children's classic which has stood the test of time. more

Published in 1912, the fantasy novel focuses on the exciting adventures of Trot, Cap'n Bill and Button Bright, as they are accidentally transported to a mysterious island in the sky, where they encounter its eccentric residents, an unscrupulous ruler, and a strange set of laws.The story sets into motion when Trot, a little girl from the southern coast of California, and Cap'n Bill meet a peculiar young boy carrying a large umbrella. Introduced as Button Bright, the young boy reveals that the umbrella is in fact magical and has the power to transport anyone from one place to another, claiming to have used it to journey across various long-distance destinations until finally reaching California. Furthermore, the young boy provides details on how the magical item works, explaining that the umbrella takes him to any destination that he voices. Consequently, the trio is inspired to take a journey to a nearby island, but instead they are transported to an entirely different and quite literal take on the referred destination. Subsequently, the group find themselves on the magical Sky Island, which they later discover is divided into two distinctive regions inhabited by the Blues and Pinkies. Though the regions are separated only by the Great Fog Bank, both races are disinclined to cross the area, which is sufficient in keeping the two races apart. Incidentally, the three travelers land on the blue side of the island and acquaint themselves with its population, a blue race known as the Blueskins, whose color successfully convey the prevailing grim atmosphere across the region. Later, they deduce the reason behind the Blueskin's widespread misery, as they meet Boolooroo of the Blues, a ruthless tyrant who employs a creative method of punishment for any sort of disobedience. In an attempt to escape the tyrant's threats, the unlucky travelers must make their way through multiple obstacles in order to reach the other side of the island, while also figure out a way back home.Nevertheless, the piece offers a vast array of delightful characters, intense magical moments, and unforeseen predicaments, which only further strengthen Baum's magical appeal. Certain to mesmerize with its effective incorporation of various elements, Sky Island successfully engages audiences of all ages, as it encourages them to embark on a magical experience of their very own. more
