It was only another Wednesday for those living it. A merchant crossed a sea, or someone wrote a diary and didn't expect it to be read a century later. No one woke up and knew that they were witnessing what we could call "history" today. Only in retrospect did those moments become history. They were just another part of someone's ordinary life at the time. The best history podcasts bring that perspective. They take their time, fill in the blanks and tell you how so many little decisions over the years became the moments we remember now.

      Podcasts Covered:

Hardcore History: Epic war narratives

The History of Rome: Roman chronology

Revolutions: Revolution case studies

The Rest Is History: Host-led debates

The Ancients: Myths and empires

American History Tellers: Cinematic narration

The WW2 Podcast: Military campaigns

Tenfold More Wicked: Dark historical cases

In Our Time: History: Expert perspectives

Fall of Civilizations: Societal collapse

Stuff You Missed in History Class: Hidden historical gems

You're Dead to Me: Comedic analysis

Noble Blood: Royal scandals

1. Hardcore History: Epic war narratives

What started out as a small 16-minute episode called "Alexander Versus Hitler" in July 2006 has grown into a podcast where one episode can run longer than four hours. The podcast lives up to its name, because Dan Carlin doesn't like to rush his episodes. His six-part series on World War I, "Blueprint for Armageddon", runs 23 hours long. I was surprised to hear that Carlin is not a historian. He is a former radio broadcaster and journalist, with a passion for history that shines through in his podcast.

Hardcore History won iTunes' Best Classic Podcast award in 2014 and the Podcast Award for Best Educational Podcast in 2015. Well-deserved, for the amount of effort that went into research and production, as well as the value listeners get out of it. Fun fact: Hardcore History has a companion podcast called "Hardcore History: Addendum" that features shorter-form content like author interviews and listener Q&As.

2. The History of Rome: Roman chronology

In 2007, Mike Duncan went looking for a good Roman history podcast. He couldn't find anything. So, he made his own. The History of Rome podcast began that July and ran weekly for almost five years, closing in May 2012 after 179 episodes. Duncan started with the myths around Rome's founding and walked all the way to the year 476 and the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Most episodes run 15 to 30 minutes, told in plain language with a dry sense of humor.

The podcast was downloaded well over 100 million times, and it won Best Educational Podcast at the 2010 Podcast Awards. Duncan proved this quote right: "If you want something done well, do it yourself." Fun fact: Duncan has also led in-person history tours, taking listeners of the show through Rome and other sites he narrated.

3. Revolutions: Revolution case studies

After finishing The History of Rome podcast, Duncan didn't slow down. In September 2013 he launched Revolutions, and this time he chose a theme instead of a place. Each season takes on one great upheaval in history. Across ten seasons and nine years, he covered the English Civil War, the American Revolution, the French Revolution, the Haitian Revolution, the wars of independence across Spanish America, the July Revolution, the revolutions of 1848, the Paris Commune, the Mexican Revolution and the Russian Revolution. The French season alone stretched to 55 episodes.

Season 10 (Russian Revolution) closed in July 2022, then Duncan ran an epilogue season from September to December 2022 asking what these upheavals had in common. Revolutions ranks among the best history podcasts in the world, and lets us see how ordinary frustration snowballs into a movement, and then a new government. Fun fact: In October 2024, Duncan brought the show back with a fully fictional season about a Martian Revolution in 2247, narrated as if by a future historian.

4. The Rest Is History: Host-led debates

In 2020, two friends started talking about history lessons like they were swapping stories at a pub. And the rest is history (pun intended). The Rest Is History podcast, hosted by Tom Holland (the historian, not Spider-Man) and Dominic Sandbrook, has an impressive range of topics covered. One week they dig into the Roman emperors or the Norman Conquest of 1066, the next they rank the ten worst parties in history.

Holland brings his knowledge of the ancient world, having translated Herodotus and Suetonius, while Sandbrook leans into modern Britain, making it one of the liveliest British history podcasts. In 2025 Apple named it Global Show of the Year, the first UK-based show to take the title. Fun fact: Their listener games include full knockout tournaments, among them a World Cup of ancient gods voted on by fans.

5. The Ancients: Myths and empires

If your curiosity runs to the ancient past, The Ancients podcast is for you. Hosted by Tristan Hughes for History Hit, it launched in 2020 and now puts out two episodes a week, each one a conversation with a historian or archaeologist about a specific slice of antiquity. The topics stretch far wider than Greece and Rome. You get Cleopatra and Julius Caesar, yes, but also Stone Age Orkney, the Nazca Lines of Peru and the origins of our own species.

I like how Hughes asks the questions a newcomer would, which gives us the answers we would've had to Google otherwise. By April 2026 the show had passed 600 episodes, which makes it one of the deepest ancient history podcast archives you can browse. If you're interested in history from the very beginning of the human story, I highly recommend this podcast. Fun fact: Hughes' own specialism is Alexander the Great, in particular the messy power struggle that broke out among his generals after he died.

6. American History Tellers: Cinematic narration

American History Tellers launched on January 3, 2018, and needed less than a day to prove itself. By the following morning, it had already climbed to number 1 on the Apple Podcasts charts. Host Lindsay Graham used to work in marketing, then in insurance, until he lost that job in 2015. With time on his hands, he started tinkering with audio drama, producing a political thriller called Terms. That eventually caught Wondery's attention and put him behind the mic for what became one of the network's flagship American history podcasts.

The show moves through the framework of American history: the Cold War, Prohibition, the Gold Rush, the Space Race, and more. I love the sound design in particular, because it makes each episode play out like a real scene. New episodes come out twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays. Fun fact: Graham also hosts American Scandal, Wondery's podcast about corruption and downfall in American public life.

7. The WW2 Podcast: Military campaigns

Angus Wallace grew up hearing about the war from his own family before he studied it in any formal way. His father joined the Royal Army Service Corps in 1944, and his uncles flew Sunderland flying boats and Lancaster bombers. That inherited interest turned into a World War 2 podcast, and Wallace has since built it into one of the deepest catalogs of interview-based WWII coverage online, with over 300 episodes.

Each episode brings on a historian, biographer, or battlefield guide to talk through one subject in depth, from the SOE's camouflage section hiding weapons and radios, to the final Soviet assault on Berlin in 1945. Wallace also invites the children and grandchildren of veterans to talk through letters, diaries, and photographs passed down through their families. Fun fact: The podcast launched in March 2015, just months before the 70th anniversary of the war's end.

8. Tenfold More Wicked: Dark historical cases

Kate Winkler Dawson had already spent years researching two killers for books her editor turned down. When she moved into podcasting instead, that shelved research became Tenfold More Wicked, produced by Exactly Right Media. Season one followed Edward Rulloff, a Gilded Age academic who killed members of his own family, escaped prison and stayed free for three decades, and still found defenders among the era's elite, including Mark Twain, once he was caught.

Later seasons covered the Edinburgh body-snatchers Burke and Hare, a judge and his wife killed by their own son in 1935, and a Los Angeles woman whose jealousy led to murder in the 1920s. Dawson, a journalism professor at the University of Texas at Austin, also hosts a companion interview show, Wicked Words, talking to other true crime writers about their own cases. Fun fact: The first season later grew into a full book, All That Is Wicked, published two years after the episodes aired.

9. In Our Time: History: Expert perspectives

In Our Time began on BBC Radio 4 on 15 October 1998, when Melvyn Bragg took on a Thursday morning slot nobody thought would last long. Bragg kept hosting for the next 27 years, guiding a panel of three academics through one topic a week until the archive passed 1,000 episodes in 2023. It is officially described by the BBC as covering everything "from Akhenaten to Xenophon." Bragg meets his guests only a few minutes before recording starts, and the programme goes out largely as recorded, with no editing pass to smooth over hesitations or disagreements.

Bragg's final episode aired on 3rd July 2025, and he announced his departure in September 2025. Journalist Misha Glenny took over as host from January 2026, continuing a show that still draws a weekly audience above two million. The show has passed 200 million downloads, and a companion book, Fall of Civilizations: Stories of Greatness and Decline, reached the Sunday Times bestseller list in 2025. The show went through several pairs of hosts, including Candace Gibson and Josh Clark at the start, before Tracy V. Wilson and Holly Frey took over in 2013 and have run it since. Wilson and Frey release two episodes a week, each about 30 to 50 minutes, and pick almost anything from the past as long as it makes a good story: a chemist overlooked for her own discoveries, a forgotten organizer of the Boston Tea Party, the slow invention of the raincoat.

iHeartMedia absorbed the show in 2018 when it acquired the HowStuffWorks podcast network, and the back catalog now runs past 2,700 episodes.
