The Communist Manifesto was conceived as an outline of the basic beliefs of the Communist movement. The authors believed that the European Powers were universally afraid of the nascent movement, and were condemning as 'communist,' people or activities that did not actually conform to what the Communists believed. This Manifesto, then, became a manual for their beliefs.In it we find Marx and Engel's rehearsal of the idea that Capital has stolen away the work of the artisan and peasant by building up factories to produce goods cheaply. The efficiency of Capital depends, then, on the wage laborers who staff the factories and how little they will accept in order to have work. This concentrates power and money in a Bourgeois class that profits from the disunity of workers (Proletarians), who only receive a subsistence wage.If workers unite in a class struggle against the bourgeois, using riot and strikes as weapons, they will eventually overthrow the bourgeois and replace them as a ruling class. Communists further believe in and lay out a system of reforms to transform into a classless, stateless society, thus distinguishing themselves from various flavors of Socialism, which would be content to have workers remain the ruling class after the revolution.The Manifesto caused a huge amount of discussion for its support for a forcible overthrow of the existing politics and society. more

Orignally written as a series of newspaper articles in 1847, Wage-Labour and Capital was intended to give a short overview, for popular consumption, of Marx's central threories regarding the economic relationships between workers and capitalists. These theories outlined include the Marxian form of the Labour Theory of Value, which distinguishes 'labour' from 'labour-power', and the Theory of Concentration of Capital, which states that capitalism tends towards the creation of monopolies and the disenfranchisement of the middle and working classes. The Theory of Alienation, which describes a dehumanising effect of capitalist production, in which an immediate social signifcance of labour to the worker is absent, is also touched upon. These theories were later elaborated in Volume 1 of Capital, published in 1867. This edition of Wage-Labour and Capital, published in 1891, was edited and translated by Friedrich Engels, and remains one of the most widely read of Marx's works. Karl Marx's Capital: A Critical Analysis of Capitalist Production is a critical analysis of the political economy or the capitalist system. In this 3 volume work, he says that a capitalist economy can only survive by exploiting the working class. The concepts discussed in this book laid the foundations of the political doctrine that would later be known as communism. This book has three volumes, the first volume is Marx's critical analysis of the capitalist mode of production and how it's effects on poor people. The second volume of Capital was subtitled 'The Process of Circulation of Capital.' It contains his analysis of the marketplace, how value and surplus value are made and his views about what a capitalist or entrepreneur is. The last volume of the work was actually just a collection of notes by Karl Marx compiled by his close friend Friedrich Engels. There are seven parts in this volume which basically summarize the important points of the first two parts of the book. It's the most read part of the book today. Capital was very critical of the different principles of classical economics which was the prevailing school of thought at that time. It was published when Karl Marx already had a well established reputation thus provoking a big debate among academics after its release. The principles explained in this book had a big influence in the development of the communist doctrine. This book was written in a academic way and is meant to be read by someone with a foundational knowledge of economics. Although, communism has long faded in the stage of world politics, this book is still a very important reference to people who study political science and economics or those who are just interested in knowing more about the different types of economies. more

Originally crafted as a scathing expose of the Chicago meatpacking industry of the early twentieth century, The Jungle by American journalist and author, Upton Sinclair, was based on his investigative work into the dark underbelly of capitalism in the country. Throughout his entire career, he wrote passionately about the inhuman conditions that lay behind the glittering facade of free market economics.Jurgis Rudkus is a Lithuanian immigrant. The novel opens on his wedding day to the lovely young Ona Lukoszaite. The young couple struggle to make ends meet in the new country. Their family and friends are in similar circumstances, working in the cutthroat conditions of the unregulated sector in such areas as meat-packing and butchery. Rudkus takes up a job in a slaughterhouse but he and his wife fall into debt and are fleeced by con men and unscrupulous scammers. Their families are unable to help and when Ona confesses that her boss had demanded sexual favors so that she can keep her job, it proves to be the last straw for Jurgis. He attacks the predator and is promptly thrown into jail. His hopeless life becomes all the more tragic...The Jungle is a channel for Upton Sinclair's deeply socialist leanings. Though born into a poor but socially privileged family of Southern aristocrats from Maryland, Sinclair left school early to start working in a newspaper. He supported himself through college and continued to work with the paper. He joined a popular socialist journal 'Appeal to Reason' and began to work on a series of investigative pieces.Initially, he was unable to find a publisher for The Jungle, as everyone he approached felt it was too shocking and dangerous. However, he finally found a small publishing house that was willing to take the risk. Sinclair himself was unprepared for the extreme, mixed reactions that greeted his somber novel. President Roosevelt who considered Sinclair a 'hysterical, unbalanced and untruthful crackpot' was forced to admit that The Jungle depicted the reality of American capitalism. Further, the novel also led to public lobbying which compelled Congress to pass the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act.As a blistering attack on the destruction of the American Dream and the terrible experiences of immigrants in America, The Jungle is matchless. However, it also provides a slightly one-dimensional and biased view of the evils of capitalism. The benefits and advantages of this system are not explored and Sinclair portrays it as an evil mechanism that destroys everything that it touches.The Jungle is indeed a gripping if disturbing portrayal of the disreputable side of wealth generation. more
