John G. Nicolay was Abraham Lincoln's private White House secretary. With assistant secretary, John Hay, he wrote the two volume definitive biography of Lincoln, 'Abraham Lincoln, a Biography.' Although this is a condensation by Nicolay of that biography, it is still a sizable work and a fairly thorough treatment of the life of the 16th president of the United States. more

With the election of the anti-slavery Republican candidate for President, Abraham Lincoln, the Southern states decided they had to take drastic action in order to protect their own interests. On December 20, 1860, a secession convention met in South Carolina and adopted an Ordinance of Secession from the Union. Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas quickly followed suit. These states sent delegates to Montgomery, Alabama and on February 8, 1861 adopted a provisional constitution for the newly formed Confederate States of America. Jefferson Davis was chosen as the President for a six-year term of office. The Constitution by which the permanent government of the Confederate States of America was formed was reported by the committee and adopted by the Provisional Congress on the 11th of March, 1861, to be submitted to the States for ratification. All States ratified it and conformed themselves to its requirements without delay. The Constitution varied in very few particulars from the Constitution of the United States, preserving carefully the fundamental principles of popular representative democracy and confederation of co-equal States. These events were to set the stage for the bloodiest and saddest war in American history. In a conflict that combined elements of the Napoleonic Age with features of the new Machine Age, at least 600,000 Americans would lose their lives fighting for constitutional principle, sectional differences, economic self-interest, and moral righteousness. The Boys' Life of Abraham Lincoln is a biography with many anecdotes that takes one deeper into the thoughts, personality, and beliefs of the man that was Lincoln. While the title indicates the book is about Lincoln's life as a boy, the book is a full, if somewhat shortened biography. It is very well written and was a joy to record. One might ask, 'Who was Helen Nicolay?' Her father, John George Nicolay, was Abraham Lincoln's private secretary and doubtless much of the material comes from his complete biography of Abraham Lincoln. ( Summary by Tom Weiss) more

Long before he was President and having just started his law practice, 28-year-old Abraham Lincoln delivered (January 27, 1838) a speech on the dangers of mob rule. Seeming to speak to our present time, he warned that mobs, or people who disrespected U.S. laws and courts, could destroy the United States. He went on to say that the Constitution and rule of law in the United States are 'the political religion of our nation.'Delivered to the Young Men's Lyceum in Springfield, Illinois, the speech became known as 'the Lyceum Address' and was titled, 'The Perpetuation of Our Political Institutions'. In the speech, Lincoln discussed in glowing terms the political regime established by the Founding Fathers, but warned of a destructive force from within.In 1905, as President, Theodore Roosevelt penned an introduction to a collection of Lincoln's essays and letters (The Papers and Writings of Abraham Lincoln). In it, he zeroes in on Lincoln's message to the ages: 'His life teaches our people that they must act with wisdom because otherwise, adherence to right will be mere sound and fury without substance; and that they must also act high-mindedly, or else what seems to be wisdom will, in the end, turn out to be the most destructive kind of folly.' - Summary by John Greenman and Wikipedia more
